For years, I described myself as an afternoon person. I often struggle to wake up in the mornings, no matter what time I go to bed. I prefer to get ready for work and eat breakfast in silence because I’m not fully awake. On the weekends, I used to sleep until I woke up, which could be any time between 10 and noon! I started to realize that while sleeping until noon was relaxing, I would spend about 50% or more of my weekend asleep! Considering that I work 5 days a week, sleeping through most of my weekend left little time for me to relax while awake or do anything besides run errands.
A few months ago, I made the decision to wake up before noon on the weekends. It might not seem like a big deal to some, but it has significantly increased how much free time I have! I still don’t feel fully awake in the mornings. There will never be a day when I’m in the mood for an all out dance party at 9am. Even so, I’ve made great use of my time. Below are my suggestions on fun things you can do before noon!
1) Go for a run
New York City can get crowded very quickly. When I wait until later in the morning or early afternoon to run, I find that I spend more time running around people that actually running. Getting out in the morning is a great way to avoid the tourists and whomever else might be standing on the path.
Volunteering at a local non-profit is a great way to spend your Saturday morning! I love helping people and it’s usually very low key, which makes it a fun morning activity. (Just remember to bring the coffee beforehand).
3) Take a yoga or meditation class
I started practicing yoga consistently about a year and a half ago. Many times I’m sore from my workouts and I dread getting into downward dog, but I always leave class feeling refreshed, rejuvenated and stretched out. I love going to yoga in the mornings because it’s a peaceful to begin the day and reflect on life no matter what it may hold.
